Techinque: Hybrid picking

Techinque: Hybrid picking

Techinque: Hybrid picking

We all have 5 fingers on each hand so don’t relegate your picking hand to merely holding your plectrum! As for you finger pickers out there, grab a pick to increase your attack! See the note legend I provided for clear instructions in the free attached PDF but it’s easy to remember: pick(v), middle(m), ring(r), & pinky(p).

This simple exercise utilizes the CAGED method to ascend up in CMaj voicings and descend down in Cmin voicings while alternating the hybrid picking pattern all in 3/4 for a more natural picking sequence.

The important take-away here is to recognize implement and employ different techniques to create your own unique style.

Listening to someone like Brent Hinds of Mastodon who employs a hybrid-picking technique to rip through blazing banjo rolls while alternating back and forth between sludgey stoner doom riffs is a perfect example of what I’m talking about (especially on tracks like “Divinations” and “Crack the Skye”).

So take a look at your surroundings, upbringing, background, and other interests or curiosities that you have which are outside of the box to bring a unique take to your musical expression.
